What are 10 staple items I need for my fall wardrobe?

I am a 27 year old female with brown hair, blue eyes and a very fair complexion.

I want classic, not super trendy items. And, color(s) would help too! (Example: Grey wool coat)

Thanks!

According to Tim Gunn and other style experts, you need:

Basic black dress

Trench coat

Classic dress pants

Skirt

Blazer

Classic white shirt

Day dress

Cashmere sweater

Jeans

A comfortable alternative to a sweatsuit

I agree that good wardrobes can have other items built around those ten staples.

For me, I would also add a another coat to that, such as a black, gray, cream/white, navy or red peacoat or something similar. It depends on what color you want.

A daydress is where it can vary a lot. That depends on your personal taste.

For the black dress, the shape and cut will vary with your body type.

If you're looking for a more mature and classic look, you could try this mixed in with your trendier stuff.

Anyway, some things you could look for would be....

Button-down shirts/blouses, jeans that aren't too trendy (by that, I mean classic cuts and styles), trousers that are straight leg in neutral colors (black, gray, tan, brown, even some pinstriped), fitted blazers and other structured jackets, pencil skirts, a-line skirts, 3/4 length sleeved tops (can be v-necked, wrap tops, etc), wrap dresses, pea coats or trenches.

Accessories are where you can have inexpensive fun with chunky, long, beaded necklaces, dangley earrings, scarves, belts, etc.

Also, be aware when choosing color. Bright colors are great, but sometimes jewel-toned shades are more sophisticated. Having said that, color can be great to add some flair to an otherwise neutral and drab wardrobe.

Fit is important. In a classic look, it seems that nothing is ever too tight or baggy.

Also, although some may see this as copying, you can look at other people's styles to see what you like. You'd be simply drawing inspiration. Make note of what you like on other people and consider if it would work on you. Look through magazines. Look at street fashion sites. You can either find what you like, or you can at least see what you DON'T like.

well, I'm a guy, so it might not be as accurate, but you need a good coat, like a black pea coat, and a white button-up, a cashmere sweater, in red, or a neutral, tweed trousers, or any mid weight fabric; Tee shirts, a pair of pumps, in a fall color, a pair of flatts, a skirt in a heavy weight fabric, and some good winter gear.

What are 10 staple items I need for my fall wardrobe?

1. Trench coat- It will go with a lot of things. Brown or black.

2. Ankle boots- Very cute. Any color.

3. Long sleeve, button up top.

4. Jeans. darker denim is better.

5. Any gold jewelery- It goes w/ everything.

6. Close fitting turtlenecks- If you like them.

I could only really think of six. Sorry. Good luck shopping!

Ten Staples You Absolutely Cannot Live Without:

- pair of bootcut jeans (preferably med/dark)

- LBD (Little Black Dress)

- trench coat

- black pumps (can be peep-toe, pointy-toe, round-toe, patent leather, high, low, etc...)

- cardigan (invest in this one! Wear blue to play up your eyes)

- cashmere sweater (maybe a different shade of blue, or a girly shade of pink or lavender)

- a striped oxford (white and color of your choice)

- a dress you can wear to work, or out to dinner, with friends, etc...

- a pair of go-with-everything flats

- black pants

- basic t-shirt (get lots of different colors and styles, wear them all year round!)

And for the heck of it... five more items that you don't absolutely need to survive, but probably shouldn't risk it:

- pair of boots

- a pair of skinny jeans or wide-leg jeans

- a knee-length A-line skirt

- a mini-dress

- a lightweight, hip-length jacket

The most important thing is to adapt this list to your style and to have fun with it!

Check out the Ann Taylor website. They are having a big sale. You can see what you like and order it or go to the store and see if you like it on yourself. Gap usually has a big sale at this time, too. New York and Company has changed their look and is not so teeny bopper anymore!
