My fave colorist who bleach-foiled my mousy ash brown hair has retired and my new colorist always seems to keep me golden brown with a few golden blonde highlights around my face. It is disappointing and it makes my pale skin look blah. I miss my bright shiny blonde highlights. I thought I looked good that way. Was I wrong? I am tempted to buy a drugstore highlighting kit and do it myself. I need some grey coverage now as well. What to do?

Don't do it yourself, and especially don't buy anything from a drugstore. Highlights done by yourself will never look right. Wait till you need to go back to the salon, and tell the stylist that you want to have lighter highlights, they will understand. Explain what the other stylist did and she can repeat it for you. Or go to a new salon, and explain to the stylist exactly what you want, maybe the one you were going to know doesn't get it. To tone the highlights, you can get So Silver shampoo from Matrix Essentials in a salon, and use to tone the golden blonde highlights to a more cool blonde color, be careful and only use it for 2 or 3 times a week or your hair will turn purple.

Bring in pictures of your hair when your retired stylist was maintaining the look you wanted. Ask the stylist that is doing your hair now if the salon keeps client records of the formulas used on your hair. or just let her know the next time you go in you want the highlights lighter than she's been doing them. If they do not turn out the way you want- tell her immediately after so she can do them again free of charge- especially if you are a regular client of the salon.

Now that that is out of the way. Have you talked to your new colorist and let her know how you feel? Tell her you want more blond highlights and a little thicker too.
