Hairless Rat?

I got a hairless rat for valentines day, and the pet store didnt tell us how she was but she had a little bit of grey fur and its recently started to fall out, like shes completely hairless on her back and shes losing like a line of hair down her head, i was wondering if maybe this happens when they get older or if she might have a disease?..

Hairless Rat?

True hairless rats are born naked and stay naked throughout their lives, but the more common Peach-fuzz hairless can be found at pet stores. They have curly whiskers and a curly (Rex) coat. They will grow a coat just as any furred baby would between 7 to 10 days old.

Every baby rat molts it's first baby coat at around 6 weeks of age. The Peach-fuzz baby will start to loose it's coat and to ones amazement, no hair grows to replace it. A Peach-fuzz can go completely bald before a soft peach-fuzz feeling coat comes back in. The thin, fine, coat may come and go for the rest of her life, or she could remain hairless.

One of my rats, Oliver, would show you the best example of a peach fuzz hairless from coat to no coat:

Your baby is completely normal :)

Are you able to provide a photo of your baby? I sure would love to see her. You can e-mail an attachment to spazrats@yahoo.ca if you can't provide an attachment here.

OddFellows Rattery is the altimate webpage for caring for hairless rats because she is the one who developed this variety of rat for healthier genetics in the first place.

Hairless Rat?

Most hairless babies have alittle fuzz when they are young as they age it falls out.

Hairless Rat?

oohh, romantic......

Hairless Rat?

We have a litter of baby hairless rats right now, and they are all fur right now. When hairless rats get older, they loose their fur. Hairless rats are actually a mutation from regular rats. But it is not harmful in any ways.

Hairless Rat?

She doesn't have a disease-This is normal=]

That has happened to all of my hairless rats.

A good website I go to for info and to ask questions about my rattie's is the rat %26amp; mouse club of America-

Hairless Rat?

oh dear

Hairless Rat?

She's probably a rex rat. Are her whiskers curly ? Double rex rats will have some fur then lose it after a while. Although if her whiskers are normal, she's probably just losing her excess fur. Coz you got her from a petshop, she's gonna have very bad genetics, and so will not be COMPLETELY hairless most likely :)

Also, NEVER NEVER NEVER keeps rats alone. If she is by herself, please get her a friend, otherwise she may resort to self harm or lose her mind.

I'm also not judging, but those who keep rats alone also tend to do other things to harm their rat without realizing (probably because they failed to research the animal before they purchased it). Just some tips, but rats need 2ft cubed of cage space per rat (good rat cages are ATLEAST 1 meter x 1 meter x 1/2 meter) , and also should never be kept on sawdust or other dusty beddings.
