When your hair goes grey, does it grow in that way or does the strand of hair change color?

Once the hair color changes, it grows in in the new color. If it has turned grey, any new hair will also be grey. Some people have hair that gets lighter as they grow older, without going grey. Myself, for instance, I had jet-black hair as a youngster, but hair that grows now is of a lighter shade. I'm digressing.

This is because the "going grey" is due to a loss of pigment in the hair follicle area, so that the pigment that once colored your hair is now gone. Since there is nothing to change the color of your hair, it comes out as grey or white, which would be the natural color of it (so to speak).

Not scientific, I know, but I hope the answer helps.

It actually turns white (there are no 'gray' hairs), from the roots out as it grows.

First it changes colour...u find a strand that is part coloured and part white. And when u pull it, the new strand tht grows is completely white.

That's not true. When your hair is "grey," what happens is that your follicles are not putting in the pigment like they used to. It's the same phenomenon that creates highlights--it's just a different pigment scheme. You could also compare it to tanning, except with grey hair, you don't get any pigment. I guess the best example would be like when leaves change in the fall. They are the natural color at that time because the green chlorophyll is gone out of them. Your hair is really grey (or white or silver or whatever you get), but has pigment in it. When there is no pigment, it's its natural color. I know that seems kind of confusing, but I hope it helps.

p.s. didn't see the person above who said the same thing. Sorry!!

Yeah it would be the individual hairs themselves that turn grey
